Children at High Altitude: Pulmonary and Renal Abnormalities.
نویسنده
چکیده
• At elevations above 10,000 feet alveolar hypoxia leads to pulmonary arterial hypertension, arterial hypoxemia, and secondary polycythemia in most persons.' The adjustments of adults to this hypoxic environment have been extensively studied but there is relatively little information pertaining to neonates and young children. The only published catheterization study on young children at high altitude is that of Penaloza et al. who reported that in seven infants the average pulmonary arterial pressure was greater than that found in older children or adults. The studies to be described below reveal anatomical abnormalities of the pulmonary vasculature and renal glomeruli in children reared at high altitudes, thus providing an anatomical basis for the pulmonary hypertension observed by Penaloza.

متن کاملHigh-altitude pulmonary edema in children with underlying cardiopulmonary disorders and pulmonary hypertension living at altitude.
BACKGROUND Pulmonary hypertension has not been described as a predisposing risk factor for high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) in children. Previous studies have shown an association of HAPE with abnormally increased pulmonary vasoreactivity to hypoxia but generally normal pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) after recovery. OBJECTIVE To describe HAPE of relatively rapid onset and its management ...
متن کاملIncreased lung vasoreactivity in children from Leadville, Colorado, after recovery from high-altitude pulmonary edema.
Cardiac catheterization was performed on seven children after recovery from high-altitude pulmonary edema. All were life-long residents at elevations above 10,000 feet. Three of the seven had developed pulmonary edema without antecedent travel to low altitude but had an upper respiratory infection. Response of pulmonary arterial pressure to 16% inspired oxygen in all seven was compared with tha...
متن کاملHigher pulmonary artery pressure in children than in adults upon fast ascent to high altitude.
The response of pulmonary artery pressure to high altitude has not been studied in children. It is also not known whether the individual response is hereditary. Therefore, the response of pulmonary artery pressure to high altitude was measured in pre-pubertal children in comparison to that in their biological fathers. Echocardiography was performed at 450 m and over 3 days at 3,450 m. Systolic ...
